Europe: Cultural stereotypes still influence salaries

In Europe, a woman earns on average 16% less than a man; this is what emerges from the latest report published by Eurostat, the statistic office of the European Union.

Even though the EU has included gender equality among its highest priorities, and the salary gap is shrinking over time, there are still social factors affecting women’s career and, as a consequence, their salaries. Many of the Member States have now adopted specific measure, like national collective salary negotiations, that have almost eradicated the illegal practice of offering a reduced pay to women for performing the same tasks of men.
